 NEW INFORMATION:
Is this how Dorothy felt...or...what the heck is going on with the weather? Parts of the mid-west are covered in water, tornadoes in Iowa have mowed down Boy Scouts, Lake Delton in Wisconsin has turned into a giant mud pit (with hints that Tommy Bartlett's Water Show will turn into a mud-wrestling team until the dam break that emptied the lake is repaired and the water replaced). On the other hand, Georgia, the Southeast and the West have started yet another year of drought conditions. The weather is definitely weird. There's no denying it. Not that I'm an alarmist, mind you. Weather is an iffy thing to begin with. And we just don't have the truly LONG term data gathered from areas to know what we might expect. In Modesto, where I live, some of the records for weather only date back to 1910 or so -- that's just about a hundred years. Sure, many areas east of us have older data available -- but for so much of that time, if you didn't see it, you couldn't write it down... sort of like the tree falling in the forest... now we can see the whole forest from the sky & satellites track everything down to the smallest funnel cloud formation that may or may not hit the ground. We have tons more information now than we've ever had. All the data seems bigger than ever before and with instant communication, the media expands coverage & hype to an astounding degree.
And yet -- I am saddened that four Boy Scouts who were learning leadership skills and disaster preparedness got a first hand look at what nature can offer. I am not immune to the devastation that water can do -- I've seen the Tommy Bartlett Show (and I'm one of those kids who LIKED it) and toured The Dells on a Duck. I have family in Wisconsin (North and South) and worry about how much more water can drop on them before they turn into Cheese-headed fish. I worry about the lack of water in the West (and am trying to bang into my sons heads that water is precious and not something to waste).
The tornado that dropped Dorothy in OZ might be on the prowl again.

Please pardon my irreverence this week, but I couldn't help myself. The book of the week is by Judi Barrett -- CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS. If this isn't a week where meatballs might fall out of the sky, I don't know what is. Illustrated by her husband Ron with whimsical humor to match the text, this book is a must for all those kids and adults who need something to laugh about this week. Enjoy.
